Whaler Weekend

We went into the weekend with a huge but fun mountain to climb… three games in three days. Friday night it was our first meeting with MIB. Sure, we heard all of the talk about ringers and them sweeping the league, but the Bandits proved that they could be beat. Our goalie was late so we appreciate the extra time that was given to get him on the ice. “Flipper” from MIB seemed to be a cool guy before the game as he asked us if this game would impact our playoff position. The game was full-on shortly after that. Both teams gave 100% and it was a great match up. Somewhere in the first period, Flipper stopped before the blue line on the other side of the ice from our bench, pivoted toward us and fired a hot slap shot directly into our bench. It hit the glass above our heads and was about two feet from going over the glass where our friends, family and kids were sitting. We got into a shouting match with him, but nothing physical came of it. No penalty was called. If anyone wants to defend him on this, I’d be glad to read your comments. Otherwise… I just don’t get it. Hats off to MIB for robbing us of OT and scoring the game-winner with two seconds left. It was a great game apart from Flipper flipping out.

Saturday night was the first round of the playoffs with the Jets in our path. They are a solid team, but it was our night. We had a long bench and were able to change lines frequently. We knew we had to stay fresh if our older players like me were going to make it through the weekend. The typical shouting matches broke out from time to time, but I think we have all come to expect that. The Jets stayed within reach of us until we extended the lead in the third. The Whalers advance with a 6-3 victory.

Finally, we took the ice with the big bad Bandits on Sunday night. Just before the game we stood in the lobby and watched the Senators’ throw out everything they learned in anger management class. Because of all that mess and OT, our game was pushed back. I’m sure all teams playing Sunday felt that on Monday morning… it happens. Anyway, we had beaten the Bandits in OT early in the season. We also knocked them out of the playoffs last season. I guess they had something to prove. As one of the Whalers mentioned before the game, no odds maker would take us. We had a weak record and were about to play our third game in three days. Regardless, we were confident we could win. The Bandits are a very skilled team and I think they may have wanted it more on Sunday night. Besides, they just saw the top-seeded PJ’s get knocked out early and maybe that provided some motivation. Throughout the game it was pretty clear that the Bandits were the better team. They moved the puck well, they seemed to have more momentum and Greg Perry stopped a lot of shots. Paul Thurston of the Whalers scored with a few minutes left to make the score respectable, but the Bandits proved to be the better team 4-2.

Regardless of our very average 6-6 record for the season, I think we still knew that we had the potential to beat any team on any given night. Unfortunately, we dropped games to teams that we were “supposed” to beat (thanks Joes), and struggled to keep a consistent roster going through the vacation season. So, that’s our story for the summer. Hopefully, it will have a happier ending next season.

  1. What was the score when flipper flipped out? I will be the first to admit your fans can annoy the opposing team with the airhorns and screaming (sounds like a damn Brahmas game) but firing pucks at them is inappropriate. I'm surprised a penalty wasn't called if it was as obvously intentional as you claim. Anyway I am assuming you guys were winning when this happend and your fans clearly drove him over the edge.

  2. It was pretty early in the game. They may have been ahead or it was tied. I don't think we had enough fans there to make an impact.

  3. Well MIB is a beatable team. If it wasn't for their goalie, they're record wouldn't be as good. We outplayed them earlier this season and spent more time in the offensive zone, but that goalie is insanely good. I look forward to Thursdays game. Should be a good one.

  4. One more thing. Besides us winning is there any logical reason why there's so much hate for our team? I mean, in my opinion we are a pretty classy team. I can't think of anyone that intentionally starts anything or constantly hacks at opponents sticks. Some players in this league are absolutely hack happy.

I know I'm a classy player. I never get penalties and the only time this season I ever talked smack was when an MIB player tripped over my stick himself and proceeded to get up and hack me because of his clumsy self.

Overall I just think we play very good as a team and have good chemistry. You could say we have one ringer I guess, but thats pretty much it. And just look at the Sens and Bandits if you wanna see ringer stats. They have guys who got over 20 points this season!

  5. We love ringers on the Sens.

  6. Watch a Sens game and you'll see that Palmer doesn't take the puck end to end and he cant dance around defenders like some can. Sens are a hard working team, yes Palmer has a shit ton of points but almost half is from assists and those goals didn't come unassisted.

PS: Rampage #17...no one brought you guys up...so I cant give you much but Ill bring a gold star for you next game for being such an upright citizen.

  7. Rampage #17, you need to take that gay "stay classy San Diego" crap to the double rainbow blog. I guess that's why you all wear those pretty girl light blue jerseys.

  8. Didn't mean to start anything. And I actually like the Sens and Palmer and know that you guys do play as a team. I was just pointing out other teams have good players too. And there has been complaints about our team coming from Chad.

As for Ice Hole, this is the I-League so whatever man. And our jerseys are badass just for the record! haha

I'm just doing this all in fun guys. Thought I'd stir the pot a little.

  9. Actually. It's not an I-League. It's Bronze league. Get your shit straight kid.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Speaking of stirring the pot, anyone ever notice Brandon and Hvidston look alot alike?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Haha ok buddy. Either way there is obviously a lot of beginners in the league, and either way its still rec hockey.

  17. You know, it's tough for your insult to hold any validity if you don't even use proper grammar, Rampage #63, at 11:45pm. For future reference, it looks like, "You're stupid."

You'll notice the correct semantics, and also notice the period at the end. There we are.

  18. Thank you professor Anonymous what would i do without you?

    Oh that's right not care.

  19. Can we all just get along?

  20. Rampage... All I have to say is that you have a Keller Indian on your team... what?! I don't get it. Is he Rampage or Indian? If he's going to be on your team, tell him to buy a jersey. Looks like he really doesn't want to commit to your team. Is he a sub? How did we turn this conversation to Rampage anyway? I don't think I mentioned them in the blog.

  21. Haha. It's funny because it looks like you're stupid, Rampage #63!!!!!!11one lololol

    Go PJs!

To the above post from 40 Something, Rampage #63 does have a jersey with his name on the back and everything. Now all Rampage members are sporting the powder blue. Which by the way Rampage get big props for picking that color. It is a unique color that is new to the league, and makes them stand out from all the other cans on the shelf.

While I am on the Rampage (directing this at #17 Rampage), I do think that their team is very talented. They have made big strides in their two seasons here at Nytex. Going from a team who couldnt buy a win to a team who could very well be considered the favorites to win the keg this season. I played against you guys once this season, and was very impressed with how well you have gelled together. Only thing was when your coordinator made a comment to me on the bench about a guy playing on the Average Joes being too good I said that you guys had no room to talk. But its all water under the bridge, you guys pulled out a victory in a tight and competitive game.

Back to the Whalers/MIB, slapping a puck into a teams bench intentionally is beyond idiotic. We had a similar incident a few seasons back that resulted in a suspension of a player who fired a puck in anger after losing towards the other teams bench. We are going to make the league a zero tolerance league for the fall/winter season. Lots of issues came up this season, mainly fighting, several individual fights, and then there was the whole line brawl thing.

All in all a great season though, two divisions makes things pretty fun, especially for the playoffs. Now we have conference finals on Thursday Bandits vs Sens and MIB vs Rampage. Should be a good night of hockey.

Next season we are planning something a little different which I will make an announcement on shortly.

  23. Rampage 63 is no where near as good as the average joes guy that played for teams in Europe, but it was a good game and it is water under the bridge and I love a challenge on the ice.

  24. 40-something white guy,
I do first and foremost apologize to you, your team mates and especially the fans. That was an idiotic thing to do I admit. I have never done anything of that nature before [taking an issue with other team members vs the one I had a conflict with]. Me and one your team mates had issues [multiple on 1 shift] that probably should of been handled on a one on one basis. But I won't get into that here because that is not the issue at hand. The shot was actually meant to hit below the cap of the dasher and as I recall it was no where near going over the top. Your fans were not the target, nor should they be. It is pretty cool that many show up and support you guys. I did however take a penalty for that it took Hale a couple of minutes to call it though and he and I talked about it during the trip to the box and after the game. I am usually pretty chill and let things go, but the few incidents that happened that one shift set me over the top. I have actually played on a couple of tournament teams with Hamstra before [one this past Christmas] and hung out and drank some beers with him before at DPSC Euless. My teammates have been giving me grief about it since and rightfully so. Just to clarify again your fans were not the cause of this nor where they the target. If you or any one from the Whalers crew needs further info let me know. I am usually in ZuRoma after wards and hell at the least I owe you all a pitcher or two.

  25. Flipper,
If that's really you (not an imposter), then you are a stand-up guy and I can respect that. Glad your team mates are keeping you in line ;)

  26. It is me, I don't have a blog spot username/login. I did try to PM you but I guess that is not an option. I was the only person besides Tim aka "Buttercup" that would know I played on the holiday team with Brian. I was expecting the Chris Pronger treatment every time I touched the puck from your fans though. ;)

  27. Rampage #63 played high school hockey? thought that was not allowed if even they played goalie???

  29. Sometimes Knute will authorize a player to play in Bronze. 63 was a back up goalie, back up to the back up I think even. My kid played at Keller too. Most of the ex high schoolers are in Silver League. Sure 63 will be told to play there only before long, my kid was told that.

  30. MIB game was fun Solid Goaltending and Defense will win games.
Jets game was actually a lot closer than score shows a few freak goals and they just ran out of gas towards the end but very clean game.
Bandits game always fun playing against Decker and the crew. Noticed a huge change in positional hockey now that the bench doesn't have a certain screamer on it.... Perry I don't like you any more.. ha ha good job in nets bro you always shut me down!!!

Good luck to those still playing keep it clean and enjoy a Stingerless finals!!!!

  31. Talking about hockey again. Thats what I like! Yes, the average joes guy is a very good player(we call him green shorts) It was fun watching him and 63 on my team go against each other. They both have great stick handling skills. Both of them are also great team players and don't score at will like they probably could.

Playing against MIB tomorrow is going to be a very tough game. I know I said they were beatable earlier, and they are, but they play great smart hockey. If only old Bobbywood would let a few goals in for us...:)

We didn't have a chance to play against the Bandits this season, but they seem to be pretty good and have a lot of offense.

  32. I thinks it's wonderful Rampage let the mentally challenged play. Randy Gregg, I heard he runs around in the locker room in his Superman underoos claiming to be the next Pavel Datsyuk. Brian Crawford can't dress out and color coordinate with his team. Maybe his mom needs to stop dressing him out. Greg McCutcheon, really a Smurf. At least y'all got rid of your pedo coordinator of last session, so there's a plus.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Lol. Randy knows hes not good! He just likes to get out there and have fun doing what he can...like go behind the net when were on defense instead of guarding the point like a wing is suppose to do! haha. And like Chad said earlier, Crawford has had the proper uniform for the last two games.

And hey now! I'm shorter than Greg is! He's a good player and a good guy. He just gets fired up easily.

And yes, our coordinator did not do a good job at all, but we all would of never met each other if it wasn't for him. A lot of us have developed good friendships.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I can dress?? and color coordinate, dark blue and light blue are both blue.... and my jersey was on back order ice hole.

So just curious why won't you tell us your name?

    ReplyDelete
  35. It's okay Brian. Ice Hole is just messing around.

  36. I predict Rampage win over MIB in OT. Im gonna call Rocket as the guy who gets the game winner.

Bandits beat the Sens 16-15 in overtime. Palmer will win the best hair award for the season.

Also I think the real Ice Hole is in love with #63.

    ReplyDelete
  37. MIB over Rampage by one goal: Flipper directs all his shots toward the net, but gets quite chippy with the Rampage D-man #63.

Bandits over Sens by three big ones: Bandits don't get distracted by the fighting and stay focused on scoring.

    ReplyDelete
  38. My prediction is: Sens 2 Bandits 6
Rampage 4 MIB 3 in OT

    ReplyDelete
  39. Nice predictions...MIB and Bandits both won.

    ReplyDelete
  40. ... waiting to hear the scores and details...

    ReplyDelete
  41. Bandits scored late to tie, and then proceeded to win in shoot out.

M.I.B. wins 3-1 with even shots on goal in a very chippy game by the powder blue team.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Actually, the Sens tied the game 1-1 with 22 seconds left in the 3rd, after trailing 1-0 for most of the game, but lost in the shootout.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Fuck you, Flipper!

"The shot was meant to hit under the cap of the dasher, but was no where near going over the top...."

You are THAT confident in your shot that you can aim from across the ice at a pin point spot, yet you are STILL in Bronze? FUCK YOU!

"The fans were not the target" Who was? You should be suspended just that other dumb ass for shooting AT somebody.

YOU DON'T DO THAT! What a douche.... Get a clue asshole, this is Bronze league. Go to another rink if you can't control your temper, dick-weed.

I can't believe you didn't get your ass kicked for that stunt, but that's for another day.

You pull something like that almost anywhere else, you leave the rink in a fuckin' ambulance. Consider yourself lucky Flipwad....

    ReplyDelete
  44. The Whalers should have stood up for themselves then. Assholes don't learn by being called out on a blog... obviously
