Stanley Keg Champion Stingers and Borrachos win the All Star Game

The Stingers took the Keg last week in a 7-1 romping of the Jets. See the highlites below. Sorry for the long delay getting this up and running Killer has been sick.

Bronze League All Star Team

The All Star Team for the Bronze League is listed below. The only players not on here would be the goalie (s). Those will be voted on by the coordinators at the coordinators meeting coming up soon. The Bronze All Star Team is comprised of players that were voted in by their teams and submitted by their coordinators. This game should be very competitive. The game will be on February 27th at 8:40. Vegas bookers are taking bets now.

Spot Light On....Los Borrachos

Spot Light On looks at the other participant in the Bronze league All-Star game, the Silver League Borrachos.



Team History?

The team was conceptualized during a kids practice upstairs at the bar at the Euless Dr. Pepper Star Center when several hockey Dads, with beer muscles flexing, thought it would be a good idea to create a team with the eventual goal of playing with their kids. Started a few years back with I league at Euless then heading out to Silver at NYTEX when the rink re-opened. The team is a mix of beginners and experienced players. There are many Brothers, Dads, Uncles, nephews, on the team but we consider each other one big family, albeit a dysfunctional, drunk Uncle that shows up at holidays kind of family…LOL. The Borrachos name was thought up by our first goalie Jesse Gonzales and is an apt moniker for this bunch. Look it up.

Team Philosophy?

Drink beer, kick each other in the nads stopping just long enough to kick the other team in the nads on ice then go back to kicking each other in the nads, drink beer, repeat…..

Dud to Stud award (team member who has gone from zero to 60 fastest)

Geeze, I’d have to give this one to Mike Lee, the boy is really picking up on this hockey thing and getting the hang of it. He should stick with it.

You’ve got one bottle of fabreeze to give away, which team mate earns it?

Easy one, Jack Stuckeman! The boy cleans his gear once a year whether it needs it or not. The spot next to him in the locker room is ALWAYS the last one taken LOL.

Most vocal on the bench?

Our Spiritual leader Jimmy Stuckeman. He’s our in game coach, strategist. If you hear him yelling your name it’s not a good thing….

Team High Point?

Defiantly winning the Keg over the summer. It was a long time coming and a culmination of hard work and coming together during the playoffs to play as a team.

Team Low Point?

I would say this season with the schedule making it difficult to get everyone on the ice at the same time.

Our team loves to face off against?

We really don’t have any one team that we own or owns us. We’ve beat everyone and loss to everyone. It seems in Silver this season any given team can beat the other regardless the W/L records.

Biggest Rivalry?

Ha!, all the above! We proudly wear the title of ‘most hated team’.

Why you will win the keg this season….

We play some wild ass hockey and sometimes it helps and sometimes it bites us in the ass but when the playoffs roll around we tend to nut up and play positions and puck movement better. Also our goalie Tyler is money come playoff time. When we’re on our game, watch out!

Spot Light On.....Mike Best

Spot Light on visits with one guy who might be referred to in polite company as a "Hockey Harlot" having plied his craft for more teams than not it seems. He wears or has worn several hats around the rink- Hockey Dad/Coach/Coridinator/Skater/Goalie, he's Mike "Beastie" Best.

Originally from Bristol, England, but have lived in Canada, Algeria and here in good old Dallas for 11 years

Hockey experience?

Played a little as a kid in Canada, but then played at Nytex when it was Blue Line and also over at Euless and Valley Ranch.

I am still rubbish, but will die trying!

Current/Past teams?

Currently I am playing on the Spider Monkeys as goalie and on the Ice Kings in D league as goalie. I started playing goalie to find out what it was like as my son was a goalie for the Squirt Brahmas Travel Team. It is for me, the best and worst place on the ice! As Bill Ivey says, you are the hero or the zero for sure.

Hobbies?

I have kids and three of us play Hockey! When do I have time and money to have a hobby!

Pre game ritual?

10 beers, packet of smokes and a prayer! Especially when playing for the Ice Kings!

Any goalie in the NHL, that shit's got to hurt!

Somebody already took Invisibility, so I will go with Reflexive Precognition :- The ability to see moments in time before they happen

Your message to the NYTEX Hockey community is?

Keep on playing, it is the most fun you can have with your clothes on! The Nytex family is a great bunch of guys and girls and we all should keep it fun and safe. We also should try to set up a travel team to go and do an I-League tournament sometime! What a drunken bash that would be!

Ranger Division Bronze League

The first seed out of the Ranger division will be determined this wednesday as the Stingers play their 10th game against the Sens. Currently the Bees are sitting on 14 points alongside the Jags who finished the regular season at 14 points. In third we have the Tribe who sits on 13 points. The Indians had a crazy year with 3 OTL's. So the Ranger Division's playoff pairings will all be known this Wednesday evening after the Sens and Bees finish up. Odds on favorite right now is the Bees. They have never had any trouble beating the Sens, as the Sens have never found an answer for goaltender Dana Fenili. If the Bees take the Sens then it will be Stingers vs Monkeys and Tribe vs Jags in the first round of the playoffs.

USA HOCKEY REGISTRATION

Everyone will have to have a current USA hockey Registration starting Monday. If you don't you will not be allowed to play. It is a simple process even a caveman can do it.

Spot Light On....The Senators

Spot light on visits with a team who feels it's turn to drink from the keg has arrived....the Bronze league Senators

Team History?

In November of 2008 after playing a few games for the cupcakes Jeff Bohl (who was heading up the I League at the time) asked me to coordinate the team. First thing I asked was if we could change the name, he said yes, and so I said lets go with the Sens since Ottawa is my favorite NHL team. I asked the old coordinator for an email list or phone list, and got no response, so I decided to start from scratch. I grabbed a couple guys that had been doing the weekly stick and puck classes with me over in the west rink, and starting building the roster. Fred Walters wanted to jump from the Jags to the Sens and bring with him like 6 guys, those 6 guys had a couple friends and girlfriends who cam with them as a package deal. I picked up five guys from Euless, and a couple of my friends from Dallas, and at our first practice we had 22 skaters. We had to spread the wealth around the league, and when it was all said and done the Sens. I ordered jerseys and helmet stickers, and snagged Bill Ivey to coach. Ivey was behind the bench for only our first game which we lost 8-1 to the mighty Stingers. After that Steve Hall came in to coach for a season and a half, and then he brought Jay Waters in who has been our coach ever since. We are at the tail end of our 4th season together and still in search for our first Stanley Keg.

Team Philosophy?

Play hard, have fun, drink beer, eat pizza.

Dud to Stud award (team member who skills have gone from zero to 60 fastest)

This is a good question. Probably would have to give that award out to Jamie Welton

The stinkiest gear belongs to Mac Donovan who played with us our first two seasons. His gear you could smell 8 miles away.

Most vocal on the bench?

CJ aka the Green Monster. He never shuts up, hes got more energy than a red bull factory. The guy is screaming at teammates, screamming at the other team, or screamming at the ref non stop. He is classic, he brings the energy level up, and is great to be around.

Team High Point?

Beating the Hurricanes in the first round of the playoffs a couple seasons ago. The Hurricanes gave everyone fits during the regular season, and it was a big win for us to get past them in the first round.

Team Low Point?

Losing our captain on that ugly play earlier this season against the jags.

Our team loves to face off against?

Anyone really, we love to play, doesnt matter who we are going against, we love to be out there.

Biggest Rivalry?

Probably the Keller Indians. We have lost to them three times in overtime. A couple seasons ago we were up one goal going into the final minute of our semi final playoff game when Les Kelly put one in from the blue line. Then in the first minute of overtime we gave up a breakaway that resulted in the end of our season. Then this season their big ringer Kyle Kelly stole a game away from us in overtime. He never came off the ice the entire overtime, and tossed in a dirty game winner with 5 seconds left.

Some guys on the team would argue that our biggest rival is the stingers, but when they beat 8-1 everytime you play them its hardly a rivalry. Use to be the Ice Gators, we would always have some spirited games with them. I think there was a fight or two, and it was pretty much always a close game.

Why you will win the keg this season…..

This is our time, we have been close before but now we feel we are ready to go on a long playoff run and cap it with a keg hoisting.

Bronze Playoff Preview

As we inch closer to the playoffs the leaders are starting to get interesting. Over in the Ranger Division the Jags are sitting on 14 points with the next closest team being the Stingers at 10. However, as we take a look at the schedule the Jags have one game left and the Stingers have 4, so if the Stingers win all four that would leave them at 18 points and first.

Over in the Texan division we have two teams deadlocked in first with 11 points, Los Jets HC, and the Fort Worth Bandits. Now the Bandits only have one game left and the Jets have two, so obviously the Jets just need to win their final two games to wrap up the divison. The Sens are sitting with 9 points and three games left, so technically they have the same opportunity as the Jets, their is just more road to travel for the Sens.

Looks like the #4 seeds are pretty locked in. Over in Texan the Whalers are sitting on 3 points, so no matter what happens they will face the #1 seed in the first round of the playoffs. In the Ranger Division it looks like the Spider Monkeys are singing the same tune. SO who will they face?

Its hard to bet against the Stingers in the Ranger Division, however looks like the Texan division is a coin toss. The Keller Indians will have to face whoever loses the race for first in Ranger.

Regardless my money is on the Stingers coming out of the Ranger and either the Bandits, Jets, or Sens in the Texan Division it is so close its impossible to tell.

Word on the Street is that the Keg is getting a facelift for this new decade of hockey at Nytex. Also looking past this session the league will expand to ten teams, names will be announced soon.
