Indians 4, Whalers 3 OT - 1/29/11
The Whalers and Indians were both 1-0 going into this game. As the regular Whaler goalie heals, Bryon Chesser decides to put on the pads for the first time ever. He does quite well in the first period as the Whalers put 3 on the board and the Indians don't find the twine. Dan Watzke scores his first goal of his hockey career and the big-headed and loud-mouthed Paul Thurston puts one in to feed his own ego. TJ Aarons also scores, but that was not going to be enough. The Indians do not give up and continue to chip away. The Whalers get too comfortable with a 3 goal lead and fail to protect their first-time goalie. The game goes into OT and the Indians seal the deal with 40 seconds remaining. When it all boils down, the Whalers may really regret this one. These two teams may be at the top of the Lower league (sounds kinda stupid), but the Stingers may also have something to say about that since Briscoe and Widmann were seen on the ice Saturday night with a combined 4 points. I thought Silver leaguers were not allowed in the Lower league? Isn't that a two-league jump? Just wondering.

I think Briscoe and widmann played silver one session and got their butts handed to them. Let the stingers win and get bumped up next session and find another team to complain about.
ReplyDeleteShouldn't the MIB's be the ones in silver league?
ReplyDeleteboth MIB and the stingers are just really good bronze teams that play good team hockey. yes maybe they should both move up a level but until the other teams in the league start playing better as a team then those two will always be better. Look at the jumpers. their first season they were horrible and relied on two guys to carry them. Then they started playing as a team and are kicking ass.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! This is what we want to see more of on here. Great recap, and video to boot.
ReplyDeleteI would like to respond to 40 something white guy in regards to the silver league question. The league (Bronze) for this season is considered one league that has two divisions. So what that means is the upper and lower bronze fall under the same set of rules. Long story short playing down from silver into the lower division is still only a one league jump.
That doesnt mean you load your lower team up with silver players and march to the championship. Briscoe and Widmann played a few games in the summer silver session as the Stingers had a team in that league. To my knowledge they are not playing this current session of silver league. There are several players who very well could play in the silver league playing in the bronze league.
Now the plan moving forward is to use this season as a transition or test season to see how things go, and then the next session the league split will be finalized, meaning that the lower division of Bronze will become its own league and the upper will become its own league, both with their own set of rules, and then the only being able to play down one league rule will be more in play.
From the sounds of it, some teams are interested in having a team in both the upper and lower divison similar to the jumpers/ducks. This is an ideal scenario as it gives players a place to move up or down to better suit their skill level.
The jump from the bronze up to the silver has always been pretty big, and the silver has been more like a C league for a long while. SO by making the upper bronze more or less a D league and the lower an i league things are evening out.
MIB sucks.
ReplyDeleteReally, we do.
We're just a bunch of 30 and 40 somethings hanging out and playing hockey. I think the ringers on just about any other team are as good as, if not better than our couple of ringers, we just play better as a team. That comes from years of friendship and camaraderie. Win or lose we have fun, and that has turned into a winning team. I feel bad that people hate us so much for winning, but if it wasn't us, it'd be another team.
Chad,
The upper/lower split is great. Euless did it a couple of years back and was great. I think fewer teams playing more often helps build rivalries and helps even things out when a team might have an off-night. Call it upper/lower or do like, Platinum, Gold, Sliver, Bronze. or something.
Just from watching silver league games, these are two different animals. We'd get creamed in silver.
i'm hungry,
dog food
Thanks for the clarification, Chad. I think the Lower division will be a lot more competitive and talented than we all thought... which is good with me, but may be frustrating for all the rookies this season.
ReplyDeleteI like the split. We Jumpers have been wanting to move up since our inception, and this split has enabled us to continue to improve against similarly skilled teams, as well as to have our counterparts, the Ducks for the players who are true I-leaguers. It gives lots of options for the development of our players. A season or two in the Bronze Upper for the PJs, and we'd like to move to Silver. The Ducks have the heart to improve quickly--now they just need to get a few more games and practices under their belt.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone were to ask me, I'd recommend the upper/lower teams if you've got enough interested players. It seems to be working well for us so far!

Widmann and Briscoe played on a Sliver team once a year ago, what happened to them? With Meek and Kang and a bunch of upper Bronze players along with some rent-a-players they did nothing. Who cares about them? What about MIB? They come in here fom another rink and take everything, twice..... Who says anything? No one. Not NYTEX, not the teams, no one! What gives? Teams like the Stingers have undergone a lot of changes. The Indians, too. They both have moved up players and brought in new ones. Which is what this league is all about. It's time to tell NYTEX to start playing things like it is, not going by the same 'ole same 'ole and running out there the same line up year after year.
ReplyDeleteSee what is out there and develop a plan to better utilize who is playing and where they should play. Do a little research, don't let teams like Greenleaf put together teams from all over the league to dominate, but to put guys on teams who will have fun and challenge each other week in and week out. Make this league what it should be and that is about a bunch of guys getting together to learn the game of hockey and develop a skill that will hopefully stick with them for a lifetime.
Leave the NHL shit to the upper leagues who obviously have something to prove...
Oh and by the way if you have something to prove, you do NOT belong in the I league, upper O|R lower!
Check your douche bags at the dor.....
