Ideal Goalie Warmup

Warmup is Not...

Blocking practice
Shooting practice
Poaching your goalie
Impressing your goalie with how hard you can shoot

Warmup is...

Loosening up the muscles and joints
Connecting & exercising the control circuits
Reviewing the movements
Starts out slowly & cool; gets faster & hotter

How to Piss Off your Goalie during the Warmup...

Take shots on him while he’s setting up the net.
That’s just dangerous.
Take his water bottle and drink all the water out of it.
That’s just rude.
Start the warmup with blistering slap shots to his head.
That’s rude and dangerous.
Practice your latest breakaway move first thing when the goalie gets to the net.
Wait until he’s done his basic shots. Yes, it will be more challenging for you to do a breakaway on a goalie who’s warm, but that’s the point, isn’t it?
Take wild slap shots that don’t go anywhere near the net.
That’s a waste of time. Learn to aim your shots usefully.
Shoot on the goalie while he’s facing another shooter.
There’s only one puck on the ice during a game, and the goalie’s attention is focused on it. If this is the only way you can score a goal, you should pick a different sport.
Cheer whenever you get a goal.
Goals scored during warmup don't count.
Shoot on your goalie when his back is turned.
That is a sure way to make sure you don't have a goalie for the game.
Shoot on the referee while he’s checking the net.
That’s just dumb.

  1. I agree on your assessment of what I can do as a player to not piss off my goalie during pre game warm up. Good job.

Now let's go one step further and let the gang in on how you can properly get your goalie warmed up to be ready to start the game....

While the guys are skating around and getting loose, yes I said geting loose. (I know some guys who go right for the puck and start wailing slappers on net, not a good way to start.....) Let the goalie get his net, yes I said his net, ready. Let him go through his pre game routine. Then when he is ready, have one guy shoot 5 shots to the 5 different zones on a goalie. Low stick, high stick, etc. Go through some semi-hard wristers and snap shots. Take them from the front, in the center of the ice. Then move into some long range slappers, then go into some closer shots followed up by some break away shots.

There is nothing more demoralizing to a goalie than to have everybody and thier brother score 15 breakaway goals in a row right off the bat during warm up!

Get him into the game, after all, he is your last line of defense during the game! SET HIM UP FOR SUCCESS!

Good luck on the rink, boys!

    Stevo.

  2. To expand some more. Give him some shot right to the glove and blocker. Let him get those arms moving. If you see a hole somewhere during warm ups let him know. My guys on on Crank It Up will come to me and tell me. Then give me some shots to show what they were talking about.

Goalies also remeber during the game once you are scored on, dont let the quicksand get you. stop thinking about that one and start watching for the next shot. if you continue to be pissy or worry about the one that got in more will get in. We goalies are basket cases. Clear your mind and move forward.

  3. I think the best way to warm up a goalie is giving him a blanket...Ill be here all night.

  4. If you have a new goalie playing.
To really get it right simply ask the goalie what way he likes to be warmed up before you get on the ice in the locker room. Let him tell the guys or if you are like me, goalies tell them yourself.

When in the net I always take it upon myself to point to the shooter I am going to take a shot from. Never had a problem there.. Keeps it simple. Simple is good.
