Sunday Night Volume 5

Rampage vs Stingers are this weeks Sunday Night Showdown. Rampage are sitting on 6 points and in sole possession of third in the Ranger division. They trail the Tribe by one point for second, and are two points behind the mighty MIB.

Stingers are in rebuilding mode this season, and have only one point. They are bringing up the rear of the Ranger Division. Stingers as we all know have had possession of the Keg for the past two seasons, but have split the team to form a Silver Squad.

Rampage are in their second season, and first under the direction of Head Coach Phil Shipp. The Rampage were a team in chaos last season, but have since been really pulling it together.

This is an important game especially for the Rampage. A win will keep them in the running for the highly coveted first or second seed which will give them a first round bye in the playoffs. For the Stingers the game is very important as well as they need get a W to restore some dignity and get out of the basement.

Stingers no longer have the team chemistry that led to a record setting 5 Stanley kegs. The Rampage are trying to find their chemistry as they push on towards the playoffs. I predict this one will be close with the Stingers edging out the Rampage 5-4 in overtime.

Are the Joes above Average?

Everyone likes to cheer for the underdog... except the Whalers. The Average Joes found a way to get their first win of the season on Saturday night 7/14. The Whalers were up 3-1 in the second period courtesy of a Bill Carlson hat trick, but the Whalers still couldn't put the Joes away. After the Joes fired up the lamp a few more times, Paul Thurston brought the Whalers within one goal with about 90 seconds left, but it was too little, too late. See game video here.

I'm not familiar with the names/numbers of the Joes, but overall this is a very solid team... regardless of new recruits and beginners. The Joes might just steal a spot in the playoffs before the season is over. Good work guys (and a few fantastic girls). You deserve that one.

As far as the Whalers go.... sometimes an early season loss can wake up a team and make them stronger in the long run. Time will tell. Let this be a lesson to all of us... sometimes, "average" is enought to win.

Sunday Night Hockey Volume Three

Bandits vs Jets is usually a good game, it will be interesting to see how these two match up this session. The Jets and Bandits played for the Texan Division Crown a few seasons back with the Jets coming out on top. Jets have undergone some lineup changes since then, but there are still a few guys on the squad (and ladies-JoAnne) that can do some damage to a score sheet.
Grisley league veteran Jack Germaine is capable of putting points on the board as well as minutes in the penalty box. Look for this guy to make something happen. Jets Coordinator Brandon Suits is more than capable of scoring goals, but it will be hard to do with the Bandits bearing down on the Jets. If Suits can get some offensive help from Germaine, Stanton, and the world famous Hebrew Hammer, this one could go their way.
The Bandits have a defensive core that is extremely solid. Brandon Decker, Opie, Fred Walters, and Kent Flash Gordon are all at the top of the crop. Newcomber Brandon Wheet has a big shot, and will be looking to bury a few.
Who is gonna be Jets or Bandits? Will these two be playing for the Texas Division Title again?

Fashion Statement...?

It’s true that I have not been around the hockey block too many times, so maybe I’m just way behind on this one. Anyway, I have been noticing something around the rink lately and I’ll let you explain it to me. What’s up with wearing two different hockey socks? I’ve seen it in practice and I’ve seen it in games. Don’t tell me that you are color blind or you were in a hurry and grabbed the first socks out of your bag (slob theory)… I don’t really believe that. I guess there is a fashion statement being made and I simply want to know what the statement is. Surely, if you can afford to play in the league you can shell out another $15 for socks. I can’t recall ever seeing this in any other sport. I do remember the girls in junior high wearing two different socks and shoes at times, but that’s the only thing I can compare it to. Isn’t there a man-law against this, or am I the one who needs to review the hockey dress code? I guess two different colored gloves will be next…?

Bobby Probert-RIP

One of the greatest hockey fighters to ever play the game passed away over the weekend. Probert was a legend, not scared of anyone.
